The past 48 days have felt surreal. I've learned that we are all here to know who we are, help people along the way, and make peace with our choices. Those who know me personally know that I've spent several years taking care of my brother David. From the burbs of Takoma Park, Maryland, to Los Angeles, I took my brother in, becoming his foster parent doing anything in my power to ensure he had a fair shake at life. Teacher conferences, IEP plans, therapist visits, field trips, family outings...anything to create the balance needed to continue moving forward in life. With one parent having multiple mental health diagnoses, both parents struggling with substance abuse, and the other incarnated with a life sentence; still, with LOVE, everything is within you to break the bounds that hold you. It all had to happen to prepare me for this very moment. Although myself and many other family members did our best to steer a path away from self-destruction, my brother, David, passed away on December 14th from a fentanyl overdose. THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO CALLED, TEXTED, AND CHECKED UP ON ME IN THE PAST 48 DAYS.
