First Nations visual artist and producer @darthem123 (Emily Johnson) uses her platform to break down “stereotypes and stigmas in our society that are so ingrained from existing in a commonwealth country.”
“I saw a lot of misinformation and hatred towards my people — just blatant ignorant comments that were so disgusting I had to snap back with the facts and some one-liner jokes to lighten the mood,” says Emily. “I think comedy is a great tool for standing up for yourself without alienating audiences who may be ignorant to the social issues or intersectional racism and patriarchy that they've never had to experience before themselves.”
#NAIDOCWeek celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia. This NAIDOC week, Emily is spending time with her family in Broken Hill/Wilcannia, the area where she grew up.
