We commissioned awardee Josiah Moktar to photograph portraits of their peers and their studios for LOEWE’s upcoming fanzine, marking the 2nd year of the award.
This week we visit the studio of Djofray Makumbu, whose practice includes painting, moving image, sound and animation.
Established in 2021, the LOEWE FOUNDATION / Studio Voltaire Award celebrates talent, individuality and original thinking within contemporary art practice. The first chapter of the award benefits seven artists with two years of support, including mentorship, a bursary and rent-free studio space.
‘What has been the most transformative thing about the LOEWE FOUNDATION / Studio Voltaire award?’
‘The award has been totally transformational for me. Before I received the award, I was just making work in the bedroom I share with my brother. The award has meant that I can experiment with new mediums and collaborate with other artists at Studio Voltaire. It has meant that people take me and my work a lot more seriously than they did before. It has changed the way people perceive me and has given me a much bigger platform. Since getting the award, I have been working on national and international commissions and projects and have also shown new work at Studio Voltaire.’
