Tomorrow is the 79th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On Passover 1943, 750 Jewish men and women, mostly in their early 20s and with no military training, staged the initial, largest urban revolt against the Nazis. These Jewish women flung Molotov cocktails, used firearms, and plotted strategy. As Nazi commander Jurgen Stroop said of the women in particular: “They were not human, perhaps devils or goddesses. Calm. As nimble as circus performers. They often fired simultaneously with pistols in both hands. Fierce in combat, right to the end. Approaching them was dangerous. One captured Haluzzenmädel looked timid. Completely resigned. And then suddenly, when a group of our men got within a few steps of her, she pulls a hand grenade out from under her skirt or her breeches and slaughters the SS while showering them with curses to the tenth generation—your hair stands on end!” * This photo is of a group of WGU fighters taken just after the war. I’ve probably shared it before, but when I was going through photos to post I was just so moved by these figures: their emaciated arms and legs and yet – their fierce expressions. May their memories be a blessing and an inspiration.
