Artist @mayaontheinternet (Maya Man) makes software-based work on and about the internet. “Being on the internet is emotional and difficult and a lot of people talk about it like it’s just silly, but I want people to look at my work and recognize the complexity of forming a sense of self while spending so much time in digital space. My work relies on my experience growing up immersed in suburban girl culture and observing how it shaped myself and my peers. On Instagram, everyone’s performing with their personal profile. That’s not to say what happens here isn’t meaningful, powerful or real, but I mean that we’re always posting with an audience in mind. I make artwork about that experience of performing myself on the internet because it’s always felt both beautiful and absurd.
