Sunday We March! 1pm Downing Street The UK government has now cancelled the Global LGBTI Conference "Safe To Be Me" after over 100 LGBTI+ organisations boycotted it. šŸ³ļøā€āš§ļøLast week on Trans Day of Visibility, we found out that UK government won't ban the harmful and torturous practice of so-called "conversion therapy" for trans people. Which is unacceptable! šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§The UK government has failed LGBTI communities multiple times in recent years and in particular failed to protect Trans people. In some cases, government ministers have even proactively done harm to trans and non-binary communities to score political points. The UK government: āŒsuspended its own LGBTI Action Plan including providing support for LGBTI communities and organisations āŒsuspended plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act despite overwhelming support for the reform āŒIts own Equality Ministers opposed the right to self-identification of trans people and supported outspoken transphobes āŒHeld consultations with a transphobic organisation and platformed them at their own party conference āŒSupported trans exclusionary and discriminatory positions by the leadership of the UK's National Human Rights Institution (The EHRC). Unfortunately, this list can go on... In a few months, the UK government was supposed to be hosting the Global LGBTI Conference called "Safe to be Me". While some would argue this is a national issue, this dangerous rhetoric has been replicated across the world and many are using the UK to justify their actions. The Government's harmful rhetoric and lack of proactive action to fight transphobia and harmful practices makes them complicit of the violation of the rights of trans people. The Conference could have been a great opportunity to mobilise global political support for the rights of all LGBTIQ people in all of our diversity and to call for the ban of all harmful practices that our communities face across the world. That would have been possible if only the UK government really listened to our communities and in particular to our trans siblings, but instead it has decided to drive divisions. We won't be divided!
