Just one of several tea bowls finished in a sweeping, iron rich, brush stroke finish I call Swirl Rust. This finish is result of quickly running a hard bristled brush through a thinly applied layer of glaze. The final look can vary vastly from piece to piece, sometimes being almost entirely rust/brown toned and sometimes almost entirely white. And occasionally, when conditions are just perfect, a swirl shows up in the full range of white to chocolate. I can’t quite nail an exact result down, I come close, but that’s actually what I love about it. I find the unpredictable nature the most exciting thing about handmade pottery. There are a million variables all coming together at once to create an entirely unique piece. If everything came out exactly as envisioned there would be little room for learning and experimentation. — Shop opens early to Studio Patrons on August 16th at 3:30pm pst.
