What can we do to keep our cities cool? Extreme heat is one of the most dangerous types of weather because unlike other natural disasters, it doesn’t send roofs flying or flood our rivers. And even though air conditioning can help, it is not available to everyone *and* is a major contributor to the problem. As the chief health officer in Athens, Greece, Eleni Myrivili is working to help people stay safe and healthy from heat by building awareness and helping them prepare for the dangers of heat. But these tactics don’t stop heat from overpowering our cities, she says. So what can we do? For starters, Myrivili says we need to redesign our buildings and our cities in completely new ways, with new materials and new intentions. “We need an urban design revolution,” says Myrivili. “[It] needs to be led not by architects, but landscape architects.” That means bringing more nature to our cities — with a mix of trees and plants, rooftop gardens, waterways and biodiversity.
