Meet Pastor Dr. Byron Benton. Byron is the senior pastor of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and board member of the @lcfoodbank, which distributes 41 million pounds of food to the ten counties it serves in coastal South Carolina. Half of that food goes to seniors and children. Since 1892, the congregation has worked for “equity and social justice, addressing whatever the needs are in the community to make sure that people's humanity is seen and their needs are met,” Byron said. To address that need, Mount Moriah has established ministries that focus on childhood and senior hunger. The church holds food distributions, delivers meals to homebound seniors and provides lunch and snacks during children’s summer camps. “I don't think people understand the face of hunger,” Byron said. “A lot of people are just one sickness away from being food insecure, one missing paycheck away from that not being able to buy food.” Byron feels that rolling up your sleeves and getting to work is the best way to help. “People will be amazed at how much $1 can do, how much one hour can do,” he said. “It adds up to making a significant impact when everybody does it.”
