It took me YEARS to sign up for writing classes.
As someone who has been writing since a little kid - hello diaries! - after I moved to NYC I realized I needed to take a step further and improve my writing skills in English.
Unfortunately, my insecurities prevented me from doing that.
“My grammar is not good enough”
“How can I be in the same room with a lot of native speakers? What a joke””
“I’m so afraid”.
Last year, in October, I finally decided to just do it. I had to, at least, try.
After spending some time on @gothamwriters website, I realized Memoir would be a great choice. And when I finally sat down to enroll, the class was full. I joined the waitlist. I was hopeless, cause they told me was not common to get off the waitlist.
The next day, I got a call. I was in. I was so happy that the woman on the phone probably thought I was crazy.
I was really excited and nervous for my first day of class. It didn’t take long to realize it was not about grammar. It was about telling our stories. Being vulnerable. Expressing ourselves. And THAT’S F***** HARD!
But this crew made everything better. We shared so much, we learned so much. I’m so grateful. Our classes officially finished in December, but we have been meeting until recently, to keep writing and learning. Yesterday we had a little celebration. Can you spot the pão de queijo?
I’m so grateful. Hopefully we will continue our meetings in the future.
