Today marks 80 years since February 19, 1942, when President FDR authorized Executive Order 9066 which incarcerated 120,000 people of Japanese descent, most who were US citizens (including 3 of my grandparents) for the sole reason of being Japanese. This day now stands as a #dayofremembrance to honor the Japanese Americans who experienced this trauma. They lost their land, their jobs, and were forced into incarceration camps in infrastructure that used to house livestock. This went on for 4 years and still has impacts to this day. This day has weighed heavy on me reflecting on the long term impacts of intergenerational and historical trauma. We’ve witnessed this especially through out the pandemic seeing the large increase of anti-asian hate crimes. Just recently Christina Yuna Lee and Michelle Go were targeted and killed, yet their case are not being investigated as hate crimes. I’ve felt numb and hopeless in moments this week thinking about the safety of my community and especially the Asian women around me. I haven’t been able to process more beyond this, but I’m holding space and sending love to my Asian American community especially Asian women and femmes this week. If you want to donate or learn more here are some Japanese American and Asian American organizations you can support during this time: @denshoproject @tsuruforsolidarity @japaneseamericanfams4justice @tessakuproject @nikkeiresisters @jointhecosmos @soaroverhate @asianmentalhealthproject @stopaapihate @aafc.nyc @queerasiansocialclub
