There are few things I love more than witnessing students actually enjoying a productive struggle. Today, my mathematicians worked their way through a series of case files that demanded their full attention. At every step of the way, students were being asked to think critically, provide mathematical reasoning, and yes...have fun. Shoutout to my amazing wife, @theartoffunology, for this incredible activity. I was able to use the fourth grade activity as a template to create problems that were relevant for my 5th graders as well and I can say with confidence that BOTH grade levels thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.
