Today my heart is with the folks who have lost their moms, those who never had moms, those who have complicated relationships with their moms and those who want to be moms and are fighting to make this a reality. My heart is also with those who aren’t ready but feel forced into motherhood. Today we celebrate the special relationship between moms and their children, but we also must use today to fight for choice. The choice to become the best mother you can be when you’re ready, or the choice not to. Being a mom is one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life and something I knew I always wanted to do. While we weren’t trying to have a baby, when we found out I was pregnant, I had a choice. A choice that allowed us to examine where we were at in our lives and know if we were ready to be the best parents we could. Being able to decide when you become a parent or if you even want to shouldn’t be a privilege, it should be a basic human right. Being a mom, being the type of mom I want to be is the hardest thing I’ve ever done and no one should be forced to ignore their physical, mental, emotional or financial health to raise a kid if they aren’t in the right place to do this. This choice is currently under attack in the US although the vast majority of Americans believe in the right to choose. No matter what your choice is to become a parent, no matter what your relationship is with your own mother, please know I support you. I’m here for you. I respect you.
