I’m back up at Londo Lodge! I avoided this place all summer because it was slowly turning from “Fun, a cabin!” to “Here’s a list of never-ending problems to solve alone in the woods on a micro budget while the outside world implodes!” Summer is officially over, though California is a hotbox hellscape right now. So it’s back to school for me, time to get back to work on my checklist of things to get done to prep this place for vacation rental. Ladies, it’s not looking great and part of me just wants to give up on the idea of renting this place out because more and more costs keep popping up. The latest surprise is the gorgeous railing I designed for my new stairs, which I just found out needs to be completely ripped out and redone because the installer made some miscalculations in height and now it’s too low and won’t pass inspections. I’ve already spent about $8K on materials and labor for the stairs so ripping out all this expensive white oak, buying new materials, and starting over is making me want to go to the fridge, grab a carton of uncooked eggs, and slowly one by one smash them on my forehead while whining about the past in a way that is both unrelatable and really annoying. I don’t wanna waste wood so I’m gonna see if I can reuse it but I won’t know until I meet with a few potential carpenters. But the purpose of avoiding this job site all summer was to regain my appreciation for it and the break definitely helped. It’s great to come up here and have all this space and nature around me (and central AC, which my LA place sadly does not have). So will I ever get past these never-ending hiccups and secret county inspections and fees that keep popping up? Probably not. BUT I’M GONNA ENJOY THIS PLACE IF IT’S THE LAST THING I DO.
