What is #RegenerativeAgriculture? • This is a term, an ethos that is increasingly being used to define progressive practices of farming that work alongside Nature and not against it (i.e. no chemicals, looks to improve soil fertility and structure, diversify into a mixed farming system (growing arable, using animals to graze, horticulture) practicing a holistic, circular system, among others things, to produce nutrient-dense foods. It should be on everyone’s lips, or more accurately, on everyone’s minds. Agriculture is the building blocks of food, and we all eat. Our Isles website has a new section of our articles on regenerative agriculture, sourced from visits across the British Isles meeting those at the frontline farming this way. As I mentioned in #APortraitOfBritishCheese, we need to be celebrating those progressive ‘regenerative’ farmhouse cheesemakers (still very few in relative terms in the agricultural industry) practicing good farming with the conservation of Nature at the forefront, and yet not allow others that are not following such progression simply reside under the same ‘regenerative’ hat and loosely use the term for their produce haphazardly. Too often has ‘sustainable’ or ‘green’ been abused and misguided, so we must - and I work hard to celebrate those that do - share and support those that are truly regenerating, restoring, improving, rejuvenating our natural environment alongside working to the highest levels of food and farming.
