Orrin Evans All-Star Quintet
Dec. 9-11 at Smoke, 2751 Broadway, Manhattan; smokejazz.com.
Orrin Evans is one of the most dependable names in contemporary jazz, whether the pianist is leading a swinging small group, piloting his dynamic, Grammy-nominated Captain Black Big Band or exploring avant-garde textures with the collective trio Tarbaby.
This weekend at Smoke, his supporting cast is just as much of a draw: the drummer Marvin Smith, known as “Smitty,” a longtime band member on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” whose work as a sideman helped define the sound of progressive jazz in the 1980s; the tenor saxophonist Gary Thomas, who made a series of sharp, challenging post-bop albums in the ’80s and ’90s; the bassist Robert Hurst, who anchored Wynton and Branford Marsalis’s bands in the same era, and has since played with everyone from Diana Krall to Willie Nelson; and the trumpeter Nicholas Payton, who has ventured across the full spectrum of what he calls “BAM,” or Black American music, during the past three decades. An appearance from any of these musicians, some rarely heard in New York clubs, would be noteworthy; the chance to see them together, alongside a bandleader as assured as Evans, feels like an event.
Sets are at 7, 9 and 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 7 and 9 p.m. on Sunday; Friday and Saturday’s shows will also be livestreamed. Tickets start at $35 for the live sets and $15 for the livestreams; they are available on Smoke’s website. HANK SHTEAMER
