Visits with my Father, Parts 36, 37 and 38...FroYo.
Visited the Old Man yesterday, and saw him on Mother’s Day (my brother was in town) and visited him in the hospital back at the end of April.
Happy to report that yesterday he was coherent, had a bit of his old smartassiness and was THRILLED to be handed frozen yogurt from @yogurtlandinc.
On Mother’s Day, after brunch with the Materfamilias, my brother, @prstreiber, and I drove out to see Pops and brought him a Vanilla / Pear / Strawberry-Banana extravaganza.
“Happy Mother’s Day,” I offered as a greeting.
“Thank you!”, said Dad.
“Did you have fun in the hospital?” I asked.
“No,” he replied.
“Pops, which of the three flavors do you like?”
“All three!”
And then, as some of the yogurt ended up on his chin, I was reminded of (and retold) one of our all-time favorite jokes whose punch line is, “It looks like you blew a seal!” (Look it up. It’s a classic.)
Yesterday I brought him another round of frozen yogurt (this time with blueberries and strawberries) which he devoured with equal intensity under blue skies on the patio of his facility.
Ten minutes of natural vitamin D was all he could handle and he asked to be wheeled back inside. In the hallway outside his room, I brought him up to speed with the goings-on of each of the family members and relayed a few the day’s ridiculous MLB scores (Cards over the Pirates, 18-4, Padres over the Giants, 10-1).
After a few more minutes of news and notes he smiled and said, “I’m going to go to bed. Drive safe.” And that was my cue to hit the road!
See you soon, Pops!
