Know the Signs • Stuttering in Children • Typically when children are developing language, they may experience disfluencies which happen to many of us. They are normal and not considered stuttering. Examples of disfluencies include: 📍Adding a sound or word, called an interjection (“I um want to go home.”) 📍Repeating whole words (“Well well, I don’t agree with you.”) 📍Repeating phrases ( “I am I am 4 years old”) 📍Changing the words in a sentence, called a revision (“I had - I lost my tooth” 📍Not finishing a thought (“His name is .... I can’t remember”) Disfluencies that could indicate stuttering include: 📍Part word repetitions 📍One syllable and word repetitions 📍Prolonged sounds 📍Blocks or stops These disfluencies can be accompanied by other behaviors such as head nodding or eye blinking. Sometimes people who stutter use these behaviors to stop or keep from stuttering. They may also avoid using certain words or use different words to keep from stuttering. Feeling and attitudes can affect stuttering. Frustration, tension, excitement, or nervousness can increase disfluencies.
