Today marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark civil rights law that forever changed girls’ and women’s sports. Thanks to Title IX there are now three million more opportunities for girls to participate in sports, but girls’ sports opportunities still lag behind boys, even more for BIPOC girls. @eatlearnplay community partners like @oaklandlacrosseclub are working to address this. To support OUSD’s Title IX sports equity work, Oakland Lacrosse Club developed a girls’ expansion program in partnership with Oakland Athletic League and Oakland Unified School District, launching four Oakland high school girls’ varsity teams with a goal to double that by 2025 and reach 200 girls. Their skills clinics and sports fair recruitment reaches elementary and middle school girls and creates a pipeline of athletes for their high school teams. "I am honored to be part of building up the foundation of high school teams in Oakland. We are part of history!" -Nicole, 11th Grader, Oakland High. Today and every day, we are proud to support community programs that create more equitable opportunities for girls to play.
