Hans Hartung’s Revenge 💥
In 1975, The Metropolitan Museum of Art presented an exhibition by Hans Hartung, German-French pioneer of art informel. Forty-eight years after the boundary-pushing exhibition was unfairly maligned, Perrotin opens ‘Revenge’ at Perrotin New York.
Hartung's prevalence had been on the rise in the United States since the 1930s, ushered into the collection of MoMA & acclaimed by key figures like Clement Greenberg and Alfred Barr. Yet, Hartung’s 1975 exhibition at the Met was panned by New York Times critic Hilton Cramer, already known for his disdain of seminal European figures, such as Guston and Lichtenstein. Vocal support for Hartung from fellow artists like Alex Katz, Frank Stella, and James Rosenquist would come too late; the damage was already done.
‘Revenge’ will take over all three floors of Perrotin New York and opens on January 13, 2023.
