Yes, I know it’s not May the 4th. In fact, it’s May 25th. On this day in 1977, “Star Wars” opened in theaters...that’s 45 years ago for those of you who struggled with calculus.
Seven years ago in a studio in West Hollywood, we spent the day photographing the original “Star Wars” characters as part of a portfolio for Wired Magazine celebrating the announced reboot of the franchise by JJ Abrams.
This is a group shot of 68 Stormtroopers, but we only had 10 in the room. And this is one of 24 set ups we did that day.
At the behest of Wired’s legendary then EIC, @scottdadich, we reimagined the legendary 1952 LIFE Magazine image of movie goers wearing 3D glasses by J.R. Eyerman. You know the one. And if you don’t, you should. I’ve included it in the next post.
So...we had the 10 Stormtroopers move across the folding chairs IN CLUMPS in order to preserve the shadows, and put a white, chalk “X” on the chairs that had already been occupied!
A single head in the top, back corner of the cyc was all we used as a light source and then we put up a 12x duvy on camera left to give the helmets a bit of shape and put another one on the floor in front of them to contain the light a little bit more.
Why this post and why now? Because this image is part of Images for Humanity, a philanthropic effort, photographic fine art print sale to raise money for the people affected by the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
Images for Humanity has teamed up with over 100 acclaimed photographers to create The Ukraine Crisis Fundraiser, a photographic fine art print sale to aid the people of Ukraine. 100% of all profits will be donated to the @redcrossukraine.
@imagesforhumanity is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization harnessing the power of photography to help people in crisis around the world.
A shout out to the dedicated crew that day, working without a pre-light: @jtergo, @rockbonham, @camarena33, @adambartlett @laurendevonart and intern @madpics. @astudiofineart was our set designer. @evlasic was the tech. @timleong and @carriejlevy were Wired’s on-set representatives. I was honored to have @ballardpix shooting BTS.
