Many of our clients are trying to achieve a clean diet while still in the context of their cultural cuisine. Our cultures can have so much significance into our identity, our memories, and our relationship with our family and friends. However, our food cultures developed ages after our bodies did. Some cultures are healthier than others, but the human organism has a species specific diet of wild, raw and organic food provided by nature. Although we don’t need to be absolute purists about it, our food choices should be dominant with these characteristics. Cultural food traditions tend to be the result of farming and civilization with excess fat, heated oils, refined carbohydrates and overconsumption. Of course we can take flavor elements from our food culture and make them healthy. I grew up on Italian food and American junk in Staten Island. Thirty years later I’m still using basil, tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and sometimes lacto fermented cashew cheese to bring me back to my roots. When I look at friends that never left the pizza, pasta and ice cream culture its so incredibly clear where my body was headed if I hadn’t departed from that lifestyle. To truly get value from the cleansing life we need to release our attachment to food cultures that destroy us and embrace ways of nourishment that support us. Interestingly enough I now connect more to 90s health food as an emotional and nostalgic place than the American garbage culture I grew up on.
