In a region filled with museums and galleries, one of the best new visual art experiences can be had with the tap of your Clipper transit card.
For $3 or less, you’ll get to view dynamic new sculptures, bold tile murals, high-tech light installations, photo murals and even painted glass you can walk on. Best of all, you can take Muni to get there.
The stations of San Francisco’s new $1.95 billion Central Subway, which stretches from Chinatown to the South of Market area, are showplaces for a series of public art installations that not only flatter the new architecture but also tell the stories of their neighborhoods.
After 15 years in the works — from application process to the Nov. 19 beginning of weekend service — eight of the 10 public works selected by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and San Francisco Arts Commission are on view. Two additional works are scheduled to be finished in this month; the Central Subway begins full weekday service Saturday.
