When I first got assigned this cover, the biggest cover of the year featuring the biggest star sports has ever seen, @serenawilliams, I cried. It felt huge, and important, and historic, and I was scared. I could scarecly comprehend how to capture such a force in all of her beauty and brilliance and light. I felt an enormous sense of duty to get it right. Today as it makes it's way into the world, I'm crying again-- for just as many reasons! Black women (and girls-- hi @olympiaohanian !!) are incredible, and so fierce, and brilliant, and gorgeous, and make the world go round and man, do I love us. This set, led by photograoher @luisalbertorodriguezstudio, had an amazing group of black women behind the scenes. The incomparable @raisaflowers did the makeup, the fab @nailglam did the nails, and the divine @iam_thechong did the hair. It was my last shoot with Tish-- who left us far too soon. It was hard, and it was magical. We all bickered, we pushed each other, we wanted so badly to do right by each other and by Serena and my god did we ever. I am so proud of all of us.
