And the result? Hollywood Misfit!
Melanie Lynskey for the latest issue of New York Magazine.
And I quote: After a career-making performance in "Heavenly Creatures" at 17, Melanie Lynskey felt lost in the industry. The movie introduced her co-star Kate Winslet to the world and established Peter Jackson as a filmmaker to watch. For Lynskey, the movie came and went.
Over the next three decades, she had to find her own way past damaging Hollywood ideas about women and their bodies as well as her own self-doubt and eating disorder. "I kept getting reminded I was not the things you needed to be," she tells @e_alexjung.
Slowly, that has changed. Her best roles often contain that seed of ferocity in "Heavenly Creatures:" a demure facade masking a roiling interior self, from Sundance indies like "I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore" to the recent TV hit "Yellowjackets," where she plays a suburban mom with a potentially cannibal past.
In a New York Magazine profile this week, Lynskey recalls the years it took her to find her way out of the wilderness.
And as a portrait subject Lynskey was ideal: honest, vulnerable, eager to collaborate and interested in the process. Thank you!
