Inspired by Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz, overseen by @jdorn, built by @photobuffalo and lit by @evanmulling @alysonaliano and @maddie_mcmanus, this is the BTS look at the current cover of Variety Magazine, featuring Laura Dern, Bryce Dallas Howard and DeWanda Wise, the badass women of “Jurassic World: Dominion.” It was a Saturday in March, one week after we had photographed the entire cast for the global publicity campaign for the movie, and we were in Black Box @smashboxstudios, charged with creating a triple cover, a triple opener and three singles. Call time 8am. Build. Pre light. Block. Arrange. Rearrange. Lunch. Shoot. Tear down. Mr. @photobuffalo found four “living walls” at @jackson_shrub (that were, in fact, made from plastic) and he and @abracatrena and @addbacon spent the morning placing them and flopping them until we settled on just the right position. We had two @schmidlibackdrops, but one of them was not the one we ordered, so we flipped it upside down and...voila! We had our flooring! Rolling with the punches and making it work! The light on the cover set was a gridded medium @chimeralighting strip bank with two large boxes behind the camera as fill. The light on the backdrop was two baffled @elinchrom_ltd octobanks covered with 6x silks to make the soft light even softer. Thank you to @jenniferdorn for ALWAYS being such a fantastic collaborator.
