Our new summer partnerships were developed with one thing in mind: increasing access to PLAY and physical activity for Oakland youth. At @oaklandlacrosseclub this has been at the heart of what they do for the past ten years. Oakland Lacrosse annually introduces the sport to over 2,000 youth, with close to 200 youth from 13 partner schools participating in their free year-round program. By targeting OUSD students in middle and high school, Oakland Lacrosse uses the sport to provide academic support, leadership development, college counseling and wellness coaching. In addition, they’ve committed to increasing girls’ sports opportunities by building an eight-team varsity girls’ lacrosse league in partnership with @ousdnews. We are particularly excited about supporting their Summer Ambassador Program, where 25 Oakland high school students are trained in sports-based youth development in order to lead introductory lacrosse sessions for campers, with our partners at @oakparksrec Town Camp. What a great way for these students to gain problem solving and leadership skills!
