a great show by a great artist and friend @yanwangpreston closes this week @messumslondon on Cork Street. Yan invited me to contribute some words in the form of an essay of her London debut solo show, 'With Love' and I was more than happy to. Her path to endurance-performance based photographic art wasn't straightforward: she got a medical degree and worked as an anaesthetist in a Shanghai hospital for a time first (and everyone knows the fun doctors are anaesthetists). You shouldn't really just look at the photos anyway, you need to understand how they're made, (which involves lugging a camera up and down thousands of miles, or photographing the same every day for a year) and why... which is complicated but is a lot to do with the way society should take more cues from recombinant ecology. and how landscape photography no longer only belongs to territorial colonisers!
