My daughter Shi-An graduated early this year. No, she hasn’t gotten a full-time job. No, she doesn’t exactly know what she wants to do in a fully committed way. No, she hasn’t got a well laid out plan as to when she’s going to buy her own place or get married or anything, for that matter. Does this bother me? Not an iota, not for a moment and in fact, it is exactly the sort of state I encourage her to be in at the moment. Why? Well, I’m really proud she’s not blindly following familiar Singapore paradigms for young university graduates. She is everything I and her father Yubes hoped she would grow up to be. Curious. Hard Working. Resourceful. Vulnerable. Wilful. Imaginative. Responsible. Loving. She’s got enough part-time gigs in a variety of fields to allow her a lifestyle she wants for herself. She actively pursues and discovers the depths and validity of her passions. She travels. Takes care of both her family homes - mine and Yubes’. Sees, takes care of and entertains her grand-parents consistently. Is a great friend. An evolving partner. A doting (sometimes over-indulgent!) mother to Toastie. Upkeeps the car and wears her glasses when driving. Expresses her anxiety, loneliness and uncertainty to me. And is not afraid to tell me what she thinks is right. Or wrong. Or in-between. She has allowed me to keep growing up and discovering myself and my life in all directions and by golly, I will for her too. Forever. Go. Grow. Give. Receive. Discover. Recover. Fly. Flex. Be Free, Self-Sufficent, Interested and Engaged. You know where to find us. We’re always on your side, cheering you on, jumping if you ever need us. We’re on the ground, looking at you doing loop-de-loops in and out of clouds, over the moon and around the sun. I love so much Miss Lim. So very very much.
