Last Thursday, at 3:28pm, the world lost one of the greats....William Paul Streiber Jr. passed away, due to multiple complications. Our stepmother Agnes was by his side. Over the course of his 86 1⁄2 years, Dad was many things to many people, but first and foremost he was a loving, supportive father, grandfather and husband. Dollar Bill always had a smile on his face and a sharp, witty, smart-ass response in every situation, to any question, utterance or observation made by anyone within earshot. He was born in Los Angeles on Christmas Day in 1935 and often noted that he shared a birthday with "at least one other important historical figure." He liked his vodka gimlets straight up and his margaritas with salt on the rim. His preferred cut of meat was the ribeye, and he could effortlessly carve a Thanksgiving turkey or a Holiday prime rib. He was a lifelong Dodger fan who, in his later years, would watch reruns of old games, just to hear Vin Scully call the play by play. He started going to the Rose Bowl as an 8-year old, with his father, and always rooted for USC or the Pac8, Pac10 or Pac12 team. When I was a kid and we’d watch the game on TV, he would bemoan the 68degree, clear-sky, Pasadena weather because it meant that more folks from Ohio, Michigan or Illinois would move to Southern California permanently. “We just need a little earth quake to send some of them home,” he’d quip. Any uncomfortable situation in which he’d find himself would often be described as “being better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick." He was an Eagle Scout, a tennis player and a sailor who loved being on the water. He loved attending the Hollywood Bowl and before the Bowl supplied the boxes with collapsible tables, he made a folding table with two legs shorter than the other two, at his work bench in our garage. After seeing Dudamel at the Bowl one summer at which two bottles of wine had been consumed, he said, “I think we all learned a valuable lesson here. Next time we bring three bottles of wine.” Pops, we are all raising a gimlet, a margarita and a glass of cab in your honor. We all love you dearly and you will be missed like crazy, especially on Christmas Day...
