Proud to be screening my film "Loko" on Indigenous Peoples Day at the Lonely Seal Film Festival. ✨🌀🌊 This film is based on my own experiences reconnecting to my Indigenous, Taíno, Arawak heritage. It has been an unexpected and profound journey that has affected me deeply. My tribe discovered (at least) 7 Caribbean islands - all on canoe! How cool is that?? So much of Puerto Rican culture - from our music, to our food, to our connection to nature and love of the coquí frog - is all rooted in our Taíno ancestry. When we shout "Yo soy Boricua!", we proclaim our Indigenous identity - we are natives of Borikén. I am so incredibly proud to be Taíno, it is my distinct honor, privilege and duty to carry on our culture, our essence.
