“If your baby is struggling with their latch, a nipple shield may be the answer to your prayers.
➡️ Inverted or Flat Nipples
➡️ Tongue Tie
➡️ Sore Nipples
➡️ Premature Baby
These are all reasons why your IBCLC may recommend that you try using a nipple shield when breastfeeding.
My favorite brand? Haakaa of course!
Haakaa has two types of Nipple Shields - their Breastfeeding Nipple Shields and their Standard Shields.
Let's explore the differences!
Breastfeeding Nipple Shields attach to your breast with suction - think of them like a mini manual pump! These shields have a base and a chamber, and then a teat which extends to create actual physical space between your nipple and your baby's mouth.
The shield is applied to the breast in a similar way to the #OGHaakaa pump by squeezing out air which creates suction. When baby starts to feed, the suction increases, stimulating your breast and starting the transfer of milk to your baby.
These shields are available in two teat styles.
The Orthodontic teat is thumb-shaped and designed to mimic your own nipple, reducing nipple confusion in babies who are exclusively breastfed.
The round teat is similar to a baby bottle - it's perfect for combo-fed bubs, or those transitioning to a bottle.
Haakaa also has standard silicone nipple shields - and these are great as they mold so well to your nipple for a natural feel. I recommend these for more minor discomfort.
Remember, nipple shields are only a temporary fix to breastfeeding issues, but are a great tool to utilize if needed, and can save your breastfeeding journey when there are latch issues.
