Tonight I'm thinking about Paula Rego ✨ One of my favourite episodes of the GWA Podcast is an interview with her son, Nick Willing, discussing his late and great mother.
"The thing about my mother is that she felt she could do anything in painting. And she was scared in her life, in her private life, in her personal life. She was very shy. You know, she wouldn't talk freely until she was in her 50s, when she could speak her mind. Also, they were very oppressive times socially. So women were not encouraged to speak their minds anyway.
...the pent up feelings of injustice and anger at not only society, but maybe her family life, had to come out. And the way they came out was through her painting. So in her art, she was completely fearless. This is the compensation for that which she couldn't do in her own life, her private life. And that's always been the case.
...her mother used to say, Oh, you see, you've done that painting. And now you're embarrassed. Look, now, what are you going to do about it? And she'd get embarrassed, or say 'What have I done?' But actually, those were the pictures that often were our best pictures. Because they would get an emotion. I mean, all great art is about emotion, isn't it? movies, literature, poetry, music, they're just about hitting a powerful emotion, honestly, with authenticity"
