I have this theory about Vivian Maier—that she felt invisible and a camera was her way of experiencing people and the world precisely because she was invisible. It was why she was so bold at photographing people; she thought they couldn’t see her, but she was constantly observing them. She was fascinated with people because she never had the typical human experience, and the camera was her way of entering in...which is why she didn’t even need to develop the film. The art wasn’t the photograph for her, the art was becoming human for brief moments in all of its beauty, banality, and pain. She got to shop with friends, argue on the street, have a lover clasp her hand, joke around with co-workers, be scolded by her mother, and dance in the street. She was able to experience the emotions accompanying these moments by proxy. I sometimes use my camera as a way of hiding, but for Vivian, she was already hidden.
