Repost from @followriversinstitute • Just two days since the first news of the leaked draft of Justice Samuel Alito’s majority opinion, we are still overcome by the magnitude and inconceivable landscape of a post-Roe America. It is not that we had not seen the political map or calculus that brought us to this place. It is that nothing – no sign, no warning – can prepare us for the damage and suffering to follow from a ruling that would so profoundly roll back women’s rights, protections, and autonomy in the United States. When we opened ‘Troy Montes-Michie: Rock of Eye’ in February, we welcomed a public into an ambiguous cartography where body could not be distinguished from landscape – both marked by histories of conquest and colonization. With this exhibition, we have thought a lot about borders in these recent months, but we did not think of a time so soon when they would need be crossed to gain access to safe abortions. Rivers is an organization of women – all of us. We have had abortions, and we have had children. And we have had the right to choose between them. We have been responsible for and in charge of what we do with our bodies. And we demand that right be protected for women across this country. As we prepare for a ruling that would immediately render safe abortions illegal in Louisiana, we urge you to join us in supporting the organizations that will provide care and choice in this uncharted terrain.
