Some clips I took while I was working on our new single Take Me Away in late 2021. This is obviously just the bones of the arrangement, and we were yet to record live drums with Dustin, but one of the things I love about the studio setup I’ve built up over the years is how I know that even in this early phase of working on a song everything I’m recording is super high quality and can be kept until the very end. So, instead of having that one day in a ‘nice’ recording studio to record all these parts and being under insane pressure, I can work in a more relaxed and playful way and have learned to trust me ears and gut in my own context. I know many of you guys may laugh at me when I call my setup ‘minimal’, but I truly have chosen to only have the best and most useful instruments in my arsenal around me. I decided a while back to buy less but better because I found over the years that one of the biggest creativity or vibe killers is a sense of doubt, especially in the quality of what you’re recording. As creatives we’re dealing with so much doubt on other more existential levels that if you can just remove the doubt from your toolbox then you’ve won half the battle. I’ve also had some people in the past assume that I’ve bought this gear out of some trust fund that I’m the heir to and let me tell you A: there ain’t no trust fund and B: this was all bought from my own hard earned dollars from believing in the work I do. Even if it took me longer to build up my collection over time and because I wanted quality over quantity, I think it was worth it bc at this point I have complete faith in what is going into Logic and it takes me way less work to make it sound good.
