Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns window display for Tiffany, under the direction of Gene Moore, 1957.
In the 1950’s, while creating major works of American art, artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg constructed this landscape for one of the Tiffany windows, overseen by then display director Gene Moore. An abandoned wooden jetty emerging from a sand dune serves as the poetic setting for aquamarine and diamond bracelets, reflected in the dark tide pool below. The collaboration of artists and nontraditional jewelry presentation is an important part of what makes the Tiffany windows so beloved. Attention to theatrical lighting and painterly composition elevates the scene, inviting the public to interpret and personalize the window‐gazing experience.
