Drive down Sunset Blvd. and you can’t miss it: a buck naked J-Lo starring in an ad for her new “booty balm” — a creamy concoction that promises to turn your backside into a perfectly round, glowingly smooth bauble that Kim Kardashian would envy. (All the while your waist remains miraculously minuscule.)
I’m a lifestyle magazine editor here in LA - one who - on each and every fashion shoot - begs the modeling agencies to show me some shots of women with natural bodies, age 30 plus to consider - women who look like they eat healthy and aren’t dramatically surgically enhanced. Real women. It is a constant challenge for me as most agencies still like to showcase to perspective clients emaciated teens - children who they envision dressed up in Uber sophisticated and often sexy clothing. (You know... the kinda stuff u wore at 13)
I point all of this out because I know professional photography is a smoke and mirrors game. You create anything and part of this photo is created. So part of me sees this and doesn’t like it. It’s so touched up. Aspirational is one thing. But this tiny frame/ big butt thing - so in style at this moment- is unobtainable for most women.
And yet there is another part of me that loves this billboard. Big time. Some of this photo IS real and it’s damn bold. And inspirational. I mean when was the last time u saw a 53 year old woman naked on a billboard?
