Traveling during the holidays — or even just juggling a full schedule of events — can make it tough to maintain a consistent exercise routine, especially if your workouts usually take place in a gym. But this bodyweight workout from Gail Rivas, Mindful Movement Teacher at THE WELL New York, can be done within the space of a mat or small rug. Do each of the moves for 30 seconds, with 10 seconds of rest in between moves. Repeat the circuit 3 or 4 times.
+ Jumping jacks (4) to squats (4) — To make this lower impact, modify by doing tap jacks instead of jumping jacks. For the squat, ground evenly through your feet and imagine you’re lowering yourself into a chair. Keep your chest lifted and core engaged as you push your feet into the floor to stand up tall.
+ Alternating side lunges to back lunges — Stand in the middle of your mat. Step your right foot to the right, bending the right knee as you push your hips back. Left leg stays straight. Push off the right foot to bring the leg back to the startinng position. Step the right foot back, keeping both knees bent, the chest lifted and the spine long. Push off the back leg to return. Repeat on the left side. Make sure the hips, shoulders and toes face forward in both the side and back lunge.
+ Downward dog to alternating knee-to-elbow taps — From downward dog lengthen to plank and bring the right knee to the right elbow, then left elbow and then back to the right elbow. Repeat on the left side. To modify, move from downward dog to plank without alternating knee taps.
+ Hip bridge marches — Start off lying down with the knees bent, feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart. Lift your hips into a bridge position, keeping your feet firmly grounded on the floor to engage the core and fire up the glutes. Without shifting the hips, lift one leg to table top and hold. Slowly lower the foot down and switch legs. Continue alternating legs while keeping the hips still. To modify, hold bridge pose for 30 seconds without marching.
