Let’s get right to the knee of the matter: Can you wear shorts to work? In legal bureaus, tech-world enclaves and even the Journal’s own office, the question is pinging around again. Not merely because summer has returned (this question, like daisies, sprouts anew each summer) but because we’re in an unsteady “what do I wear now” moment of corporate life. As execs call employees back to the office, many workers wonder why, if they spent the past years toiling in gym shorts, they should suddenly be thrust back into business-casual khakis and ties. Shorts may, in fact, represent one way to lure staff back into the office this summer. Call it the: “Sure, you have to commute...but at least you’ll sweat a little less!” incentive. No doubt, for companies, allowing shorts is cheaper than providing free donuts. “With Covid and how hard it is to get employees right now to come back to work...my employer is pretty relaxed on things,” said Patrick Riley, 30, who works in marketing in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has recently returned to the office on a hybrid schedule. Seizing on this liberated moment, Mr. Riley occasionally wears khaki shorts to work—though largely on Fridays when casual-wear is least likely to raise a cubicle-mate’s brow.
