“As a first generation Chinese American, Lunar New Year always eclipsed Thanksgiving or Christmas as far as holidays went. It was the big one in my family; an excuse to gather together, celebrate our heritage, eat well, let loose, and be loud. It was especially exciting as a kid, we’d receive these little red envelopes filled with cash symbolizing good luck and prosperity from my endless uncles and aunts (just don’t count your haul until you get home). We would often head into Chinatown, which always felt like the best kind of chaos: parades in the streets, dragon dancing, drums and firecrackers amidst this multi-colored madness. It was a spectacle and one that I have such joyful memories of looking back at. I felt proud, I felt full, I felt rich.
