Dazzling in low light, with small mesmeric gems of women in their kaleidoscopic interiors, Sohelia Sokhanvari's exhibition @barbicancentre is nothing short of beautiful ✨⭐️✨ It is all the more poignant with the current crisis in Iran and #MashaAmini, and the bravery of the protests happening around the world ❤️ Sokhanvari's miniature portraits spotlight the lives of real Iranian women, both contemporaneously and historically, who were artistic heroes in pre-Revolution Iran. Working across music, poetry, film and theatre, these women were trailblazers. Complete with a backing track sung by performers Googoosh and Ramesh, we are reminded of these women's defiance as in present-day Iran – since the 1979 revolution – it remains illegal to sing in public. Almost like comic book characters, Sokhanvari's women appear undefeatable, expressing their defiant strength and unique personalities through their incredible 60s and 70s fashion, with patterns that pulsate out of their small frames. Exciting and timely, Sokhanvari's show inspired me with hope for the future and my thoughts are with the brave women in Iran currently protesting with #MahsaAmini #WomenLifeFreedom ✨❤️✨ Head to the Barbican's Curve to see it FROM TOMORROW ✨🪩✨ • #SoheliaSokhanvari #WomenArtists
