There’s a place in Bristol I go fossil hunting called Aust.
It’s a quiet and unassuming cliff side on the Severn, home to a multitude of marine fauna and flora from 210 million years ago.
It’s a strange feeling knowing that Aust was once underwater. But it’s an even stranger feeling knowing that it will be completely submerged again in under 30 years if we continue with current carbon projections.
In fact, a lot of the south west is at risk of being submerged. Along with many other areas of the U.K. according to Climate Central’s projection map.
I’ve had this map of the southwest on my phone for well over a year now. And I’ve found myself staring at it a lot over the last few days. I’m not sure why.
In doing so it reminds me that so few people know about these projections and how it will impact their livelihoods. And that our government continues to be negligent, violent and corrupt. They are in no way supporting people in transitioning to greener futures or alerting them to the danger that faces them. But I guess that’s what happens when the structures designed to protect you end up being the ones that cause a lot of harm.
It also reminds me that conversations around climate injustice only seem to become relevant to people here once they hit closer to home. It shouldn’t have to be that way. We don’t even have collective consciousness yet, so sometimes it feels like the bar is so low.
But it’s not too late. It really isn’t. We need each and every person to become engaged in some way. Especially in the long-term struggles felt around the world, and understand how these struggles are cut from the same cloth as our own. We need people to organise en masse and use this pain to catalyse radical climate action.
I’m hoping that a revolution is afoot. Because we really need it. We owe others this too. Climate alone shouldn’t be the only reason to demand change but it’s enough as it is 💚
