Elena Miroglio and Paul Grobler dreamed of a house in the countryside. But the little taste of wilderness that they imagined for themselves wasn’t easy to find in Piedmont, one of Italy’s most important wine-producing regions.
According to the local tourist office, there are some 250,000 acres of vineyards, as well as olive groves and hazelnut farms in this section of northern Italy. “They are completely man-made, and not what we wanted,” said Ms. Miroglio, 52, who is the president of Miroglio Fashion SRL.
The original dark kitchen is now a garden room, with floor-to-ceiling pivoting glass doors overlooking the backyard. Beside it is the main living room, with high ceilings created by raising the roof. Beyond that is a dining room, with a simple black table and chairs and the odd piece of heirloom antique furniture, leading on to the kitchen. Upstairs are three en suite bedrooms.
The ground floor of the two-level barn, with its original vaulted brick ceiling, has been repurposed as a health suite with a sauna and hot tub. What used to be the hay loft is now Mr. Grobler’s favorite spot, an open-plan workspace he calls the studio. It is lighted by a row of new windows on each outer wall and triangular sections of glass embedded into the gable ends. “I pretty much live in the studio,” he said. “I work there, relax there, read there.”
