Reblooming iris also called remontant iris can be categorized into many classes such as Cycle Rebloomers, Repeaters, Rebloom Carriers, and All Season Bloomers. Iris falling under these categories have the genetic tendency to rebloom in the late summer into the early fall months. Remontancy is often dependent on geographic location, climate conditions, and cultural practices. Rebloom may vary from year to year. However, here are some tips to cast the best chance for a second flush of blooms.
WATER - Remontant iris will require more frequent watering throughout the summer than the single-season blooming varieties. But be careful not to overwater. It’s good practice to allow the soil to dry out a bit in between waterings. Bearded iris don’t like wet feet!
FERTILIZE - Rebloomers require an extra feeding of fertilizer low in nitrogen. We recommend a ratio of 6-10-10. This is to replenish soil nutrients that were used up during their first blooming cycle. Apply a light application at the time of any new planting, in the spring when the tulips are blooming (generally in March), and a second light application about a month post-spring bloom season.
DIVIDE MORE FREQUENTLY - Left undivided too long, iris will start converting all their energy into multiplying, rather than blooming. For reblooming varieties, this general rule of dividing iris every 3-5 years can be cut in half. Because reblooming varieties are able to produce summertime blooms due to their accelerated growth cycles, they can benefit from division every
2-3 years.
It has been determined that the reblooming trait is not controlled by one genetic factor, but many. A pairing of certain dominant genes and plant hormones results in the ability for these cultivars to no longer require a chill period (or vernalization) to develop a second round of blooms. We find them absolutely fascinating!
