With the way the schedule worked out, I finished filming Top Chef just as Littlehands was leaving on a class camping trip. So, I went to Venice to chill out for a couple days. I met Cecilia Alimani (@ceciliaalemani) the curator behind this year’s Biennale art fair. We spent two days together while she guided me through the whole exhibition.
What Cecilia has done for the art world is unparalleled in its magnitude, but what she’s done for women artists is even more monumental. She and her very small team thoughtfully selected artists from around the world and over 80% are women! Cecilia has shown that being inclusive truly makes the whole biennale better because you’re actually discovering something new and fresh at every turn.
The exhibit, called “The Milk of Dreams”, centers on metamorphoses of bodies, technology and nature. She weaves each piece into the next like a good storyteller. It is a staggering accomplishment. Not only because the art is so invigorating and fun to look at, but because it makes you think. The whole experience, and particularly certain installations like the ones by @simoneyvetteleigh and Precious Okoyomon (@devilintraining_) are a sensorial, immersive treat. The show is a moving testament to the human experience as it relates to technology and nature. It shows the power of art and more importantly the force of one woman’s vision when she is given the power to execute it. Years from now we will still be talking about this groundbreaking exhibit. It feels like a turning point in how and whom we let in to the preverbal canon. Needless to say, it was just the jolt my brain and spirit needed.
If you’re in NYC, check out the @highlinenyc- Cecilia is responsible for all of the artwork there, too!
