In short, #IWCA was enacted in 1978 by the U.S. Congress to ensure that Native children in the foster care system remain with Native foster care families. This was after finding out that more than 1⁄3 of Native kids had been removed from their homes and placed under the care of non-Native families by state public/private agencies. Perpetuating the separation of Native families, culture erasure, American assimilation and education, and historical genocide - post Indian boarding school era.
