People think being in your power is about speaking your truth when it’s actually about listening. — my teacher This months theme True Accountability is well underway. Class this Sunday was easily a favorite. I spoke a lot of performative accountability trends and tropes and the kinds of behaviors we do to be compliant because of unmet needs, fear of abandonment and rejection. The opposite side of the pendulum of that is that unskilled place when you’re trying to end people pleasing and you become rigid in your stance, making declarations about “speaking your truth”, and agendas of needing to get a point across from a place of power and control games. And not about any true form of communication. None of these are accountability. In my experience true accountability is what you do when no one is looking. It’s about being in right relationship with yourself. Its rooted in a deep connection to the source of where true transformation and change comes from, which is life itself and divine grace. In this way, true accountability is being willing to step into the void of not clinging to your identity, to this is just who I am and surrendering to the unknown to become the new version of you. This kind of accountability changes you and can only be done through a collaboration with divine forces. And it’s the only kind I’m really interested in cultivating to be honest. This kind of accountability isn’t about being afraid of being called out or exposed it’s about being in integrity with yourself. This kind of accountability comes from genuine prayers, of show me what I need to know. This does not mean other types of accountability practices such as genuine apologies and repair strategies aren’t tremendously valid.
