“I’m outdoorsy”~
I had a conversation with one of my oldest friends today about how our definition of success has changed over the years. We came up together in ‘the scene’, we lived on busses together, saw half the world many times over together. It was everything that defined us, at the time.
Despite the shameful undertone of resentment a lot of us share for spending so long on the road, a lamentation for things we missed out on, and how today, years later we still celebrate when we finish a carton of milk as a huge achievement of finally finishing something; today we talked about what that life gave our future selves.
Growing up in a tour bus has made me pretty useless at a lot of everyday life things. I’m still learning a lot of it today, as well as constantly trying to shed other parts of my character from it. It’s created an insane ability to see a problem 20 steps ahead, which is a blessing and a huge curse, and I still exist in a constant state of fight or flight, which is mentally exhausting. But, living on the road in our formative years with the bag never quite fully unpacked, (the literal, visible baggage of an inability to commit to being in one place for more than a few days), has given future/today me one of the greatest gifts of all...
