A few days ago, thanks to the work of @soccermouaz @syrianetf , and the generosity of the Turkish government, my sister, mother and I were able to enter Syria. For those who don’t know, there is a dictator committing the worst atrocities imaginable on the Syrian people, as we speak and for the past 11 years. Children, elderly, men and women have suffered bombings, imprisonment, torture, chemical weapons attacks, and massacres. IT IS A HOLOCAUST AND IT IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW. There are at least 350,000 victims of the Assad regime. Over 150,000 people remain missing. Around 1.2 million Syrians have been subject to some form of torture. There are 13.5 million displaced Syrians. Despite this, the Syrian people continue to fight for freedom. They are most resilient people I have ever witnessed. From complete destruction, they are rebuilding industry, hospitals, schools in the liberated areas of the north. The local governments of free Syria welcomed us with overwhelming kindness and respect. They shared with us personal stories of the trauma Assad has inflicted on them and their loved ones. We visited the Wisdom House and the orphan camps in Azaz where we met women and children who have endured more pain than most people will in many lifetimes, and yet these angels are full of warmth, light, and hope. The Syrian people epitomize bravery and strength. It was an honor to be on their land, to see the Free Syria flag, to hug the beautiful children. To be welcomed as Americans with such love and gratitude when our country has let them down. Their voices have been ignored by the world, corrupted by misinformation, and we need to help make sure the truth is heard. It’s time for us to move our government. The evidence of war crimes and witnesses are undeniable. Our ability to reach people is more than ever. And not only is there every reason to oppose this soulless dictator and his inhumane regime, there is now also a new free Syria to invest in and support.
